North Birmingham – March Newsletter
Looking out of the window as I sit here writing this newsletter it’s not quite lovely
cycling weather is it? Lets hope for some spring cycling sooner rather than later.
The Rides list :- main web site tinyurl.com/ybbml5b6 or northbirminghamcuk.simplesite.com/437293283
As we have just had a couple of rare, cold but dry winter days the 4 degree rule has been questioned. From memory it was designed to assist the ride leader in making a decision whether to cancel (or not) as they may or may not be comfortable in leading
at low temperatures and or in inclement weather conditions (including black ice).
If you think the rule should be re-visited then let us know. Email as above.
During cold periods through the winter Social Media /Online notification appears to be
the best way of monitoring/planning alternative rides so preventing you from turning up
on your own.
I understand not everyone is on Facebook or Strava however, for those that are, it remains an excellent way to reach people easily either the night before with a suggested alternative ride or even on the morning of the ride.
Another method is for the ride leaders to update the Rides list with a Message to notify
of any changes to the planned ride (please let me know if you are a ride leader and would like instructions on how to do this)
If riders are not able to access online notifications, the ride co-ordinators telephone
numbers are on the Quarterly Rides list. They should be able to advise whether the ride
will or will not be going ahead.
-----
The off road ride (organised on the second Saturday each month) for March 10th will
start at 9:45 at the same start point as the normal Saturday Ride and will head off to
Fisherwick Lakes for coffee. Bikes should be capable of riding on roads, Bridleways
and the odd tow path.
Distances will be around 25 Miles or shorter depending upon the conditions.
If you would like to help in leading these alternative rides the club is more than happy to
have a rota. If anyone is interested in car assisted rides on a Saturday to the Peak District,
Cotswolds, Sherwood Pines, Shropshire, Cheshire or wherever , on or off road (or a bit of both ) let us know. Email as above.
Beginners rides. There has been a suggestion made that we offer rides to enable newer riders to gain confidence in riding with a group over a short but reasonable distance with
a view to them being invited (and having confidence) to join the club after 3 rides.
These rides will be at a social pace and will be approx. 10 – 15 miles long. The idea is that they will be held on Saturday afternoons (which gives all riders chance to do their normal Saturday rides) and will be initially advertised for 2 rides per month. If anyone is interested in joining a group of people who are prepared to lead/support these rides, please let us know. Email as above.
Club Jumble
Our annual Cycle Jumble is taking place on Saturday 3rd March 10am to 1pm at Erdington Methodist Church Hall (opposite Erdington Rail Station, SatNav B23 6TY).
Last year we raised over £700 for club funds and continues to generate funds for the club.
Catering on the day if you can help Contact Julie Snook (07977 142236)
Volunteer on the day. We need volunteers to man the door, sell things on the club table, distribute teas and coffees to the traders, clear the hall after the jumble and deliver jumble back to the club house. You will get free entry to the jumble.
Attend the jumble. Entry is £1 from 10am onwards.
A great opportunity to have a sociable Saturday morning and grab a bargain.
Or even just some cake or samosa with a tea or coffee.

Audax
This year the Audax will be held on Sunday 29th April. We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather again this year (can we make it three in a row?) and lots of cyclists taking part.
Where there are lots of cyclists there is a requirement for lots of food. Last year we increased the variety of food that was provided and this was very much appreciated by the participants however there were only three people who managed the catering and with a 6.30am and 10:15pm finish, this made for a long day. The suggestion has previously been made that we outsource the catering for the day however, one of the reasons that the Audax is a great fund raising event for the club is because we keep costs to a minimum by keeping as much as we can ‘in house’
This is therefore an advance call out for anyone who is prepared to
Do some food in advance – cakes, pasta salads, sausage rolls etc and bring it
down to the Cooper Rooms early on 29th
Join a rota for catering services during the day.
Please let us know if you are able to help with either (or both). Email as above.
