1 OPENING STATEMENT FROM MATT HINKLEY, CLUB CHAIRMAN
“Welcome and thank you for attending our 97th AGM. It’s been a busy year for club members both on and off the bike. My year as chairman has certainly been an interesting one. Not everything we were asked to undertake this year has been popular with all members, but as a committee we achieved what we were tasked with, I hope without bias and I would like to thank everyone who supported us throughout.
We chose in April to remain the same type of club as we have done for many years, but our parent organisation, now known as “Cycling UK” is going through a period of change and I look forward to the challenges that this may present.
Cycling in the UK has grown incredibly over the last few years and I for one feel proud to be involved in this revolution and look forward to seeing where it will take us over the coming years.
I am also aware that as a committee we have not really seen much progress this year in terms of new activities or members. In an attempt to assist the committee in delivering to the club what it wants, you have all been issued with a questionnaire. The results of these will be discussed at the next committee meeting so I would be grateful if you could complete one and return it at the end of the evening.”
2 Apologies: John Davis, Beverly Fletcher, Beryl Bedford, Sue Jinks, Dave Alfonso Frost and Julie Snook.
3 Matters arising from the minutes of the last AGM
There were no matters arising.
4 Honorary Secretary’s Annual Report:
RIDES:
Our cycling club offers 16 rides each week. About 100 participate on the rides each week. The rides cover a good range of speeds from the slow ride on Saturday morning at about 9 mph average speed to the fast group at about 19 mph. We are still short of volunteers to be ride leaders for the Sunday C rides, Saturday Group 5 and Thursday C rides. The Sunday Easy riders ride has ended and the Sunday C ride temporarily suspended. We are also looking for a coordinator for the Saturday fast rides. Thanks to Geoff Howle, who has done this job for the last ten years, but feels the time is right to pass this over to somebody else. Sally Wheelwright has been proposed and seconded for the role of Saturday representative.
This year Mary Evans has introduced a Tuesday ride at an average speed of 10mph. About seven people have attended the ride per week. Matt Hinkley has organized a number of Wednesday evening rides and off road rides. The Wednesday evening rides were held throughout the summer. They started from Sutton Park and stopped at a local pub. About six people attended these rides per week and they will start up again next summer. Nick Madeley has continued to organise some off road rides and Matt Hinkley organized an alternative Sunday ride to the Bull and Bladder pub.
The usual programme of rides has given the following averages:
Tuesday 20 (+4); Wednesday 5 (-3); Thursday 17 (-10); Saturday 46 (+1); Sunday 12 (-8).
The numbers in brackets show how much numbers have increased or fallen over the last year. Thank you to the day organisers and ride leaders for their hard work in arranging the programmes. Thanks also to Chris Jones for putting all the information together for the rides list.
In October 2015 John Bedford organized a long weekend for six members at The Boar’s Head, Breton Green near Sandbach. Four rides were undertaken, including a visit to the Anderton Lift and to Jordell Bank.
Terry Dwyer and Roy Bishop organized our annual 3 Audaxes in May and the day was very successful. We were lucky with the weather and there were about 200 riders on the day. The event provided £926 to club funds. We thank Terry and Roy for all their hard work and a special thanks to Nadine for supplying refreshments at the club house.
Many of our members have also taken advantage of other Audaxes such as the “Warwickshire Wander” run by Solihull Cycling Club. For anybody who was not done that route it is a lovely ride through the beautiful South Warwickshire countryside. Seven members also rode the 100k St Giles charity ride in September. It was great to see over five hundred cyclists support the event.
In August we had our own 100 mile. There was a morning stop at Bosworth Battlefield Visitors’ Centre as the ride headed towards Willey in Leicestershire. We are grateful that the event was again organized by Gale and Tony Tibbins. We had 34 riders this year of which 31 were from North Birmingham and the remainder were from Boldmere Bullets, Walsall CTC and CC Giro.
The CTC Birthday Rides were in Framlingham in Suffolk. Nine of our members went on these rides, which cater for all abilities. Each day there were four rides ranging from twenty to eighty miles.
Between 8th and the 15th August nine of our members and four from Walsall went to Brittany on a cycling trip organized by Ian Bolton. They stayed at Moulin Conan Farmhouse and completed a number of hilly rides. An excellent account of the trip has been written by Mike Fowler and can be found in the October newsletter. Ian recently had a nasty accident near Kingsbury Water Park in October, but fortunately his cycling helmet prevented a serious head injury.
In September another joint ride took place involving riders from North Birmingham CTC, Boldmere Bullets, CC Giro and Birchfield CC. A couple of hundred people took part and attended a barbeque in the afternoon at the Royal Pub.
SOCIAL EVENTS:
Mary Evans has organized a wide Social programme, with the Ladies who Lunch being particularly successful. David Dilly has continued to organize the Men who Munch. Mary Evans has done a great job as social secretary over the years but has decided that she is unable to do that role any more. One of our newer members, Sally Wheelwright, has agreed to take over.
Last Christmas we had our usual lunch at Wishall Golf Club where trophies were handed out to Mary Evans for her work as social secretary and Terry Dwyer for his work on the club Audax. This year our Christmas meal is on 26 November at Wishall Golf Club at a cost of £14. If you would like to attend please contact Ros Llewellyn on her email at jcllewellyn@virginmedia.com as she is still taking bookings. Sally is also organizing an alternative Christmas meal at the Wing Wah Chinese Restaurant on Saturday 3rd December at 7.30 pm. Please contact Sally by email on j.wheelwright@sky.com if you would like to attend.
NEW WEBSITE:
A big thank you to Ian Heyes, who has maintained our website for the last few months. There are links to the club rides, forum, weather and our Facebook page. Our new email address is admin@NorthBirminghamCycling.uk where members can contact our committee. Thanks also to Matt Hinkley for all of the hours he has spent setting up the Forum and preparing the newsletters. These newsletters have replaced the Northern News which was discontinued earlier in the year.
Our website is being updated at the moment by our new webmaster, Charlie Wheelwright, who is the grand age of thirteen. Charlie has worked very hard on this to make it user friendly. Hopefully we will be able to communicate more information on the new website. For example, if it is wet or icy should the ride go ahead? At the moment some leaders communicate this information on our Facebook page, but not everybody is a member of Facebook so the website should give more information about rides and upcoming events.
GARMIN & STRAVA GROUPS
The Garmin and Strava groups both have healthy numbers and some members have used this as a means of communication, such as giving information about the rides members have been on. It is always nice to receive kudos on Strava for a ride you have completed.
JUMBLE SALE
In March we had our annual Jumble Sale at Erdington which raised £663 for the club. This year the event was organized by Alison Readman so a special thank you must go to her.
BARBECUE & MEAL AT HANDSACRE
In July twenty members attended the Barbecue at The Anchor Inn at Hurley and it again proved to be a popular event. Members paid £4 for their meal, with the club subsidizing the remaining £2.50. Thanks to Sue Jinks for organising this. Some of our midweek riders have also continued to attend a meal in Handsacre organised by Lesley Pymm.
COMMITTEE MEETINGS
The elected Committee of nine has had four meetings during the year. Much of our time was spent discussing the club review before the club vote at the end of April, where we decided to stay with Cycling UK (previously the CTC). However, the review proved a good opportunity to discuss ways in which the club may develop in the future. Special thanks to Mike Eades for his hard work in putting forward proposals for the future of the club.
Last year the Committee agreed that if the BBC weather forecast is 4 degrees or below at the time of the ride, the official club ride should be cancelled. However, there are occasions when the weather is dry and it is safe to ride when the temperature is below 4 degrees so individual members are free to make their own arrangements.
NEW CLUB JERSEY
Sally, Peter and Matt have designed a new club jersey. Sally has ordered various sizes of the new design, which members will be able to buy soon. Details of the new design will be on the website.
CLUB ROOM
The Clubroom is opened every first and third Tuesday of the month and all members are welcome to attend. The committee have agreed to stop members having to pay a sub to attend.
FIRST AID COURSE
In the coming year we hope to be able to offer some First Aid courses. These have been run successfully in the past by Simon Wilson.
HARRY CHILD
Finally, it was with much sadness that we heard that Harry Child had passed away. Harry was a very active member and part of the committee of NBCTC since the 1950s. He has undertaken many other roles, including organizing the Meriden Memorial Service and the Carol service. He was also Secretary of the now defunct District Association for a number of years. A number of members attended his funeral and he will be greatly missed.
5 Treasurer’s report:
The accounts have been prepared by the Club Treasurer and presented to the members. For the year ended September 2016 the club made a loss of income over expenditure of £939 compared with a loss last year of £1,045. However, this does not include the income of £926 from the club Audax. When this is factored in the club made a loss of £13 for the year. The surplus from the Jumble fell from £843 last year to £728 this year. These figures includes sales from the day as well as jumble which John sells from home through Park Cycles. The club spent £429 subsidising social events such as the Christmas meal and £100 was spent on providing members with First Ai Training. Proposed by Mary Evans and seconded by Tony Wilson. All agreed.
6 Appointment of Auditor: this has yet to be done.
7 Election of Officers & Committee Members: Proposed by David Dilly & seconded by Mick Noble. All agreed.

8 AOB
It was proposed that a donation of £100 be made to the Air Ambulance service that took Ian Bolton to hospital. All agreed.
Geoff Howle said that on May 16 The Giro are organising a Midland Monster ride. Proceeds go to the Air Ambulance and all members are welcome to attend.
David Dilly suggested that some of our funds raised from The Audax could be donated to charity. This will be discussed at the next committee meeting.
Mary will continue to organise “Ladies Who Lunch” and Theatre visits.
Christmas meal money needs to be paid to Ros for November 26 and Sally for December 3.
Meriden Carol Service is on December 18 at 1.00pm.
There was a discussion regarding the merits of riding single file or two abreast. No conclusions were drawn but common sense should dictate depending on the circumstances.
Mike Eades said that mud Flaps are available to buy which would help advertise the club.
Trophies were handed out to Geoff Howle for his work as Saturday representative and Chris Jones for his work in preparing the rides list.
Ron Tooze suggested that members could be given a paper copy of the code of conduct.
A questionnaire was handed out to members asking for their views on rides and club events. The results will be discussed at the next committee meeting.
It was suggested that a cycling app could be put on the website. If anybody knows what this app is called please contact Matt.
