North Birmingham - February Newsletter
Welcome
I hope you are all well and are managing to get out on your bike occasionally through this period of inclement weather and please remember the 4deg rule and stay safe.
Jumble Sale
Our annual Cycle Jumble is taking place on Saturday 2 March from 10am to 1pm at the usual venue - Erdington Methodist Church Hall (opposite Erdington Rail Station, Sat Nav B23 6TY). We need donations of jumble and volunteers to set up the hall the night before and help on the day. Our oldest volunteer is now aged 90 so we are hoping for volunteers to come along and let Alf put his feet up.
In 2018 the jumble was snowed off and in 2017 we raised over £700 for club funds and bought the tea urn that has helped generate more funds for the club. Here is how you can join in:
Have a much needed clear out and donate spare parts, tools, clothing, books, maps, magazines and anything else you don’t need and we will sell it on the club table. The older the better since vintage stuff sells well. In the past few years we have had four bikes donated and raised over £450 for the club so we welcome all donations.
Contact me on to arrange delivery/collection of jumble on 07742855125 or amreadman@gmail.com or bring your jumble to the club night on Tuesday 19 February (the Cooper Room, Shenstone, opposite the war memorial in the centre of the village – 8 to 9.30pm). Bring your jumble and we will sell it on the club table at the jumble on Saturday 2 March.
We need to set the hall up the night before. We do have some regular volunteers and more are always welcome. It doesn’t take long and doesn’t impede on riding time. Meet at the Erdington Methodist Church Hall at 9.15pm on Friday 1 March.
Make cakes or help with the catering on the day. Contact Julie Snook (tel 07977 142236) if you can help.
Volunteer on the day. We need volunteers to man the door, sell things on the club table, distribute teas and coffees to the traders, clear the hall after the jumble and deliver jumble back to the club house. You will get free entry to the jumble.
Attend the jumble. Entry is £1 from 10am onwards. It’s a great opportunity to have a sociable Saturday morning and grab a bargain.
Please spread the word among your cycling mates and encourage those who aren’t in the club to come along. Everyone has a great time eating cake and rummaging for bargains. See you there.
If you can donate jumble or help in any way before or the day, please contact me, Alison Readman on 01543 419722, 07742 855125 or amreadman@gmail.com.
Thank you, Alison
2nd Brittany Cycling Week 2019
I’m trying to arrange a second cycling trip to Brittany this year(the July trip is full),and am looking for a few cyclists.A minimum of 10(maximum 15) are needed to make the trip viable.
Dates are likely to be,at the moment, late April,May/June,early September or October.
We are based in a Breton farmhouse and watermill near Guerlesquin, about 45 minutes SE of Morlaix, run by Brittany Breaks (www.brittanybreaks.co.uk)
Prices last year were around £412(bed and breakfast and return ferry Plymouth to Roscoff),plus around £15 per day meals(very substantial and high quality)and wine, beer, cider.
The group is picked up from and returned to Sutton Coldfield by minibus, with bikes on a trailer.
If the ferry crossing is at night,a 2 or 4 berth cabin or reclining chair must be booked:this is an extra cost.
Rides are on undulating ,quiet, excellent road surfaces, and sections of the V7 Green Way former railway track, and average about 50 miles(or further) per day, depending on the group.
We ride to Morlaix for the market (as well as other market towns),to the Pink Granite Coast, the rock chaos at Huelgoat, and taking in many other sights and delights of this wonderful area, including the numerous patisseries!
This not a fast riding week but a flexible, social week, suitable for most riders.
For further details please contact Ian Bolton on 0121-384-5647(leave message if no answer) or 07779470786 or email me at boltoni2000@yahoo.com ASAP,with preferences for dates
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Shenstone Audax Sunday 12th May
This year we are competing with the Birmingham Velo who are organising a 100 and a 40 mile closed road Sportive. However we are offering four routes at 54, 100, 160 and 200Km.
Hopefully we get as good weather that we had last year.
Our Audax raises the most money for our club account and is desperately in need of a few volunteers to help it run smoothly we don't need you all day just an hour or two would help us immensely.
Contact the club on the above email if you can donate some of your time during the day.
