Report from Dieppe raid by Michael Fowler
Tour des Trois Vallees, Dieppe (24th to 26th June 2017)
Over two hundred British Cyclists attended this year’s event including a party of five North Birmingham Members along with five familiar faces from Walsall. The tour was excellently planned and organised by Mike Eades and included his son, Ashley.
Dieppe is a coastal Community in the Seine-Maritime Department in the Normandy Region. It is a port on the English Channel with a regular ferry service with Newhaven on the East Sussex coast.
The travel plan was to get to Newhaven by car, van or train with our bicycles and luggage. Cross the channel by ferry as foot passengers along with our bikes. Dave Frost chose the train option. The five Walsall lads travelled in two cars while the NB lads travelled together in a van, a Cab Crew Renault that was very comfortable. All three options took almost the same amount of travel time, with stops, to reach Newhaven.
The 46th Annual Tour des Trois Vallees in 2017 is a series of touring rides organised by the Club des Cyclotouristes Dieppois (CDCD) based on the roads and lanes of the countryside in and around Dieppe, offering various distances (from 30k to 140k) to suit both families and keen club cyclists.
This international event was started in 1972 by Neville Chanin- a well known cyclist who travelled widely throughout the world by bicycle. It was established in commemoration of the original Dieppe Raid in 1942 where our Canadian Allies suffered such terrible losses.
On disembarking at Dieppe we set off to find our accommodation (two gites) for the weekend. This was along the coast towards Puys a distance of about 2.5 miles. We arrived in the dark and it took some time to find the hidden keys. The five Walsall lads were in one gite with the six NB lads next door.
Saturday morning we all went in search of breakfast down in Dieppe. Afterwards the group, with the exception of Dave, set off to explore the terrain, inland from Dieppe. We did about 60 miles, stopping regularly, to visit a supermarket for lunchtime supplies, to admire the views, to take photos, to visit a German V1 Flying Bomb Launch Site.
We returned to Dieppe to attend a reception at 5pm in a civic hall for the dignitaries of Dieppe and of the CDCD to welcome the UK contingent. Afterwards we had a glass (or more) of cidre and a small pastry or two.
Sunday was the day of the main event and we all had to register and be on our choice of course by 9am. The group, with the exception of Dave and myself, had entered for the 140k audax. We were down to do 100k. However, as I had only been back on my bike for a few days after my mishap back at the end of April plus not wanting to overdo it, I decided to downsize to a 60k course. Dave decided to do likewise. After the event in the evening, we attended a three-course dinner, with wine included, at the Windsor Hotel.
Monday saw the group get ready to return home. As we had opted for a 6pm return ferry, we had the opportunity to see more of the Normandy countryside. We returned to Dieppe to tour the town on foot, taste yet more, delicious pastries and refresh ourselves with a variety of vitals from the quayside cafes before setting off to the port to catch the homeward ferry.
A big thank you to all the lads for making it such an enjoyable trip; plus a special thank you to Mike Eades for all his hard work in putting together “an excellent tour.”
